10 Best Dog Food

Best Dog Food and Best Dry Dog Food

On a scale from 1 to 10 best dog food; Let me show you my favorites. What is the best dog food or the best dry dog food?

Remember that we are all different. I am not you and - well you know what i mean. Please keep this on you mind when you are reading this.

My primary goal as a veterinarian is to make sick dogs feel better. If the are ill I'll like to cure them if possible.

My secondary goal is to prevent disease. This can be done offering vaccinations and recommend good nutrition.

This will be mirrored in my dog food choices.

First some foods for diseases and then foods for the health.

For Diseases - From 1 to 10 Best Dog Food

I know that many see modern dog food as a cause of disease. I respect this view. If true or not, I claim nobody knows for sure.

But, when your dog gets ill lot of different foods can be worthwhile to consider depending on the disease. Let me share my best dry dog food.

I use Urinary SO a lot. This is a food treating urinary diseases and manufactured by Royal Canin dog food. If your dog is suffering from struvite crystals in the urine this type of food can really be beneficial.

Let me highlight some pros and cons (the major down side is the geographic differences):

  • Main positive is its effect on urinary crystals
  • Main ingredients are rice and corn, it's not grain free
  • Named by species fat source (chicken fat), positive
  • Uses rosemary extract and tocopherols as natural preservatives
  • Not using any BHT, BHA or ethoxyquin
  • No wheat gluten only corn gluten, also positive
  • OBS In Europe it contains unspecific Animal Fat, Hydrolysed Animal Protein and BHA

The main reason is to avoid urinary problems and though you have accept the ingredients. In North America its no problem, but it can be here in Europe.

Its function is important and it works well in most patients.

Rating 1-10: I would give it 9 regarding its function. Regarding ingredients in North America a 7, its not that bad being form a big company. But in Europe, no more than 5.

You have to make up your mind if its a sign of trust if there is these geografic differences as it apears to be. I ask my self why...

I use Hypoallergenic Diet from Royal Canin as well.

This is mostly used in allergic dogs or in dogs having some kind of food allergy or food intolerance. Very common problems in dogs and therefore this food is very important.

Lets look at the high lights:

  • Very low allergenic potential
  • Rice and Soy is the main sources.
  • Named by species fat source (chicken fat), positive
  • Uses rosemary extract and tocopherols as natural preservatives (positive)
  • Not using any BHT, BHA or ethoxyquin (positive)
  • OBS In Europe it contains unspecific Animal Fat and BHA (negative)

Again a difference in the ingredients depending on location.

You have to bear on mind that this is very processed food. That is obvious when you look at the label. But you cant get this type of food on a more natural way. Not hydrolysed at least.

Rating 1-10:Regarding its function 9. Regarding the ingredients: Better in North America and give it 7. In Europe: 5

For Health - From 1 to 10 Best Dog Food

This is more difficult as I am learning all the time.

This food i am going to rate is not based on my experience. On the other hand i have studied it a lot. To the best of my knowledge at present this food is the most honest dog food.

I have compared the ingredients from Europe and North America and there is no differences. I think this is very positive.

The best for dogs do not have anything to do where it lives. I suspect more the differences being based on economical reasons.

I think no differences in ingredients and preservatives, is a sign on quality. To do the best.

This dog food is Orijen(In a new window).

Up till now i find this the best dry dog food for normal healthy dogs.

Rating 1-10:Based on the company philosophy, ingredients and their quality i give them a 9 out of 10 best dog food.
