Best dog food for liver disease

by Rossana
(Los Angeles)

Hi,
I have an elderly female dachshund who was a rescue so I am uncertain of her age. She is most likely between 11-13 years old. For the last couple of years the blood test performed by my vet shows problems with her liver function. She does not show any brain involvement at this time. She has been on Denamarin during this time with apparently minimal improvement in her numbers but no clinical deterioration. Is there a dog food, either commercial or homemade that would be helpful to her? Are there any other supplements besides the Denamarin that would be helpful to her.
Thanks so much,
Rossana

My Comment:

Hi Rossana

It is not that uncommon that some changes in the liver enzymes to occur when dogs is getting older.

Of cause, it also depends on the severity and should be monitored as well (as you are doing).

No...I don't know any other supplement that is better than Denamarin, so keep using that one.

My Liver patients often use Royal Canin Liver Diet.

There is different diets on the market, but most common disease diets is probably Prescription Diest and Royal Canin.

I would recommend to try one of these and see if there is any improvement after some weeks/months.

All the best
