Constant ear scratching

by Tammy
(Canada)

I have a rescued Weim who has grain and chicken allergies, however is he is eating a Grain free diet from Ancana (Pacifica) to be exact, having said that, we have been to the vet they say his ears are clean & he has no ear mites, Then why all the constant scratching? Should I clean his ears with something besides just cottonballs as prescribe by the vet? Please HELP!!

My Comment:

Hi

I would make this step by step approach.

First, remember I don't know the whole story. I don't know how he has improved being on this diet and.....many other possible important factors.

But, I would first find out if the itching came from the ears.I would prescrbe cortisone ear ointment/drops and ask you to use this - just for a short period.

This should improve the itching if it came from the ears.

If this improves the condition I would try a hypoallergic diet for 2 months. Again, the diet used as a diagnostic tool.

My reason for this would be to find out if he gets better on the hypoallergenic diet there might be something in the food you are using that triggers the itching.

Or.......

You could used the food you are using today and supplement with extra omega 3 (fish oil). Being anti-inflammatory, omega 3 it can sometimes stop the itching process and calm it down.

You should also be aware of lice - they often are placed around the neck and might be another cause.

This cause may be "to far out" but, well......something to consider

All the best
