Dog Diabetes SymptomsDiabetes Symptom Dog And Diabetes Mellitus In DogDog Diabetes Symptoms are not that complicated. But it do complicate things when other diseases look like diabetes mellitus in a dog. On this page you will get tips to know if its diabetes or another disease. True that the most common dog diabetes symptom is increased thirst. Other diseases can give the same symptom. Here is a few:
KidneysKidney diseases is often older dogs. But I have see a little pup, five weeks old having kidney failure. The majority of kidney patients have developed the disease over a period of time and gradually started to drink more and more. Vomiting is often seen in some patients. Liver DiseasesLiver diseases is possible in all ages. But often old dogs.It can be difficult to make a diagnosis without blood samples. You can see weight loss as well - same as in dog diabetes. If your dogs stomach is bigger than normal it could be fluid. This is a possible sign in liver diseases. This is not often seen as an diabetes symptom in dog. PyometraPyometra is very common in Sweden. In many other countries females get neutered more often. Dogs can die because of this disease. If your intact female dog suddenly drinks loads of water and been in heat some weeks ago - perhaps having a discharge!. This could be an infection in the utherus. Treatment as soon as possible is important. Phone your vet now. ![]() X-ray of pyometra (look after the small arrows) I have some pictures of a pyometra in one of my patients (Papillion). One is the x-ray before the operation. Look at the arrows - thats the infected uterus - its very big. The other one is after the uterus whas removed from the poor dog. ![]() Same pyometra as abover - after operation. TonsillitisTonsillitis would sometimes cause dogs to drink more. But often you sees him (or her) take small sips often. Diabetes dogs drink loads all the time. CystitisCystitis - yes sudden onset, drinks a lot and try to urinate all the time. But no urine is coming. Diabetes dogs can urinate a lot as well. But they deliver urine! lots of it. That's the difference. Diabetes InsipidusDiabetes Insipidus is a lack of the hormone ADH. Or it could be a lack of kidney cell response to the hormone. In this case you will no find any weight loss. The dog can be happy and healthy. The appetite is normal as well so its really only the drinking that's looks like one of the dog diabetes symptoms. Chushings DiseaseHormonal disease where the body produces to much corticosteroids. Your dog can eat more, drink more, urinate more -sometimes even have slightly raised blood sugar. But no weight loss is seen. Often you will see a pot belly and thinning of the skin. A blood sample and different tests can show if its Chushing, or another disease. Steroids used as medicine can have the same effect. DietDiet change - don't forget this. Sometimes its the same food as you normal used. But change in production or ingredients can make your dog more thirsty than normal. |
