Dog Food Glucosamine

Natural Glucosamine and Chewable Glucosamine

Dog food glucosamine is an easy way for you to add extra health to your dogs nutrition. But is it always the best glucosamine and chondroitin in it ?

Even if the body itself can produce glycosaminoglycaner (GAG) from glucose and glutamine, supplementation is important. In dogs having painfull acing joints the production of GAG is much smaler than normal. Breakdown of the normal cartilage structure is thus happening much faster.

Adding glucosamine to the diet will actually make the body produce "more than would be normal" GAG and on top of this, act anti-inflammatory.

Big benefits in the joint physiology and chemistry can be seen. Result - less painfull joints.

Instead of buying glucosamine, omega 3 and/or chondroitine supplements on top of dog food, why not use dog food glucosamine. Here you get it all.

Well, it surly makes sense.

Or not, let's take a closer look.

Dog Seize

Small dogs need more energy pr kilogram than a bigger dog. When pet dogs eating dog food glucosamine, the energy intake and the amount of glucosamine should be balanced for optimal effect.

Royal Canine made a study where the used green-lipped-mussels as the glucosamine source. Small dogs didn't have any problems getting enough joint active molecules. The bigger dogs did not got enough.

Royal Canine's Mobility Support have taken this into account. They have to different Mobility foods according to the seize of the dog. The one for bigger dogs have higher concentrations of joint active nutrients.

If you decide to try dog food containing glucosamine and chondroitine be sure this "dog seize" factor is incorporated.

Best Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Many dog foods contain pre-glycosaminoglycane. It can be within the dog food ingredients or added on later.

The food from Prescription Diet J/D have glucosamine added in the food as glucosamine sulfate. Others, like Mobility support from Royal canine use extract from green-lipped-mussel (GLM).

I think this is more like a natural glucosamine and I like the use of it. Apart from glucosamine, GLM extracts contains omega 3 fatty acids and chondroitin as well. All these work together and act anti-inflammatory or promote joint health in general.

And it all comes from the mussel - beautiful.

Why Add Cartilage?

Other joint health dog foods, have the ingredients containing more of the active components. Cartilage for example, contains lots of condroprotective agents. Adding more of cartilage in the food will increase the joint health effect.

Adding cartilage doesn't sound good. Why do this?

In many countries in Europe it is not legal to add glucosamine as an additive in dog food. But, if you use ingredients containing a lot of glucosamine and chondroitine. You try to obtain the same effect thus more naturally. And purely legal. No law against this.

So, mixing and adding ingredients containing lot of chondroprotective agents in it, is one way to make this type of dog food.

Europe is special.

Prescription diet j/d in Europe contain only omega 3.

No glucosamine or chondroitine as in America.

How many is aware about this? Not many. In fact, you could buy omega 3 as fish oil yourself and give to your dog. Properly you could save some money and get the same result.

This is an example of the downside of big companies and local rules.

The biggest disadvantage are....

The biggest advantage in dog food glucosamine is also the biggest disadvantage.

It is not possible to adjust the amounts on a more individual level. You can't give more of the chondroprotetive agents without make your dog ingest more energy.

Having a fat dog is not anything you wish, especially if joint problems exist.

Have you ever heard some saying "...and you don't need to give anything else. No other supplementation is necessary and you save money because of this" True, but you give up the possibility of being flexible. You can't half the dose after some weeks and still maintain the effect.

If you find it difficult to give type of supplements to your dog, try a chewable glucosamine alternative.
