Ear advice please.

I have a small poodle and a golden retreiver. They both seem to have red, itching, ears with odor. I have tried ear mite medicine over the counter, vet ear wash for 25.00 and vinegar. Nothing has helped them to clear this. There is no signs of crust, just red, odor and brown wax. The poodle was treated with antibiotic ointment by the vet about 4 months ago but, it remains a constant problem to them both.
Thanks so much.
My Comment:
Hi
Ear problems can be very difficult to get rid of.
Golden retrievers is a very common "ear dog" and many of them have ear irritation or inflammation being more or less chronic. It can be very very difficult to get better.
What I normally recommend to be done do if the problem is persisting, is a bacterial examination. To find out the exact bacteria/fungus involved and what kind of medicine would be most efficient against them.
Another very important step is to find out if the middle ear is involved or not. If the tympanic membrane is intake the middle ear is fine. But in some cases the eardrum is ruptured and then the bacterias ans wax have entered the middle ear. This will make it impossible for the eardrum to heal and the ear as a hole from being normalized.
The middle ear should be cleaned under sedation or general anesthesia before you can make the ear better.
Here is Sweden we have a powder which is very efficient in keeping the ear healthy. I guess it is only here you find this "wonderdrug" so you have to use some cleansing products.
But the initial steps as outlined above is very important to do first.
All the best
