my pomeranian developed eclampsia 3 weeks after having her pups. she got treated with injections and calcium tablets last night ,tonight she has a build up of fluid under her jawline and between her front legs . is this dangerous and what would be the outcome from this please
My Comment:
Hi Catherine
Fluid between jawline and her front legs – I have never seen this between eclampsia in one of my patients.
My first thought was if she had any fluid given as an subcutaneous injection and the fluid sometimes moves to other pats of the body.
This might not be that likely as often the fluid is given at the “base of the neck” area and it would be difficult for the fluid to move against gravity to the jawline.
No- I don't know why this appears.
I would suggest to monitor the calcium levels in the blood and as long they are OK I would be happy.
Unfortunately this can not be done at home so you have to give your vet a visit and have a blood sample taken.
In my experience the over all prognosis should be good. You probably should give extra calcium supplements for a while, but that is normally sufficient to make “milk fever patients” stable.
If you plan to have pups again you know her problem and you are able to give her extra calcium as soon she has whelped when the need of calcium gets bigger because of the milk production.
And...of cause all the fluid build ups should disappear soon and she should get happy and alert again.
Sorry, but the exact cause of it, I am not able to tell you.
All the best
