fish oil

I have been giving my 9 month old Jack Russell terrier (Ringo)one of my 1000 milligram Omega 3 fish oil pills everyday now for about 2 months. His coat really improved and he sheds about half as much as he used to.My question is,do you think that is to much or is it ok? Thank you Dr. Schonbeck. Danny Joe

My reply

As I understand he do don't have any skin problems or any other diseases.

Well,it is difficult to give too much good quality Omega 3 (without fat soluble vitamins).

The exact Omega dose depends on the food as well. So it can vary a lot.

He is not a large dog and I tend to say 1000mg a day for an adult human being.

I would recommend to give this dose 2 times a week instead of every day.

This would be OK in the beginning, but after some time try to lower the dose as above and see if this is sufficient.

I think it should be.

If any diseases arises it would the be OK to increase the dose again.

But lets hope this not is happening!

Everything in moderation. Never put your pet on anything without consulting with your veterinarian first. What you think may be good for him/her may be harmful if they have any pre-existing health concerns or allergies and sensitivities. Even though herbs and other supplements seem harmless, they can be harmful and can be toxic in large amounts. They can also counter the effect of any medications your pet may be on or even turn a small health issue into a full blown one. Never take anything for granted. A top of the line dog food will have all the needed ingredients for a healthy coat along with a good vitamin given daily. Please check with your vet.
