Food for acute pancreatitis

by Della Lain

My 5 month old Yorkie got sick at Thanksgiving and my fault. I have had Dauschunds all my life and they ate anything. I fed her turkey and sweets and she started with diarrhea and vomiting. Took her to the vet. She gave antibiotic, B12, x-ray, anti-emetic, sub/q fluid and all was well until yesterday. Stools are soft again.

What should I be feeding her? I give her lamb and rice dry food by Nutros and their little dinners with chicken and rice. Is this too rich for a Yorkie?

My Comment:

Hi Della

Did you vet diagnose pancreatitis? Or is the diarrhea causes but “wrong food”?

If she is OK otherwise but the only symptom is diarrhea you should be able to give some easy digested food.

In general If dogs are normal, but having diarrhea I advice the following diet:

Normally I recommend boiled rice and some boiled fish or boiled chicken. You could also choose to give her a special diet like Royal Canin Intestinal.

The diet should be feed until stools are normal again and then very slowly back to her normal diet. This is very important as changing the food too fast is the most common reason for the diarrhea coming back. I use to give the transition at least one week.

But, if there is any pancreatitis, you should give some other food.

Royal Canin came not that long ago with a very fat reduced diet called Intestinal Diet Low Fat. I used this food if there is pancreatitis for some time after recovery depending on the severity of the disease and inflammation.

But, your vet should be able to give you some “hands on advice” as he/she is the one who knows the health situation in detail.

Dogs can be different.

Some can eat all and some can't get anything apart from their normal diet.

Young dogs are in general more sensible than adults and as long she is a pup I would advice you just to feed her regular dog food for puppies.

If you would like her to get something different thy with some lean chicken. No fat and no spices.

You should probably also avoid to change her food too much from day to day. Try to by some good quality puppy dog food and perhaps canned food of the same kind.

It might not be that the food you are using is too rich under normal circumstances, but if her stomach is unbalanced in the moment you have to give her very light food and build her up again.

If she get stronger in her stomach when she is mature – time will show.

I hope this can help – other wide you are very welcome to contact me again.

All the best
