Foods High in Vitamin K

Dog foods high in vitamin K might not be that important as no indications that Vitamin K deficiencies naturally occur in dogs.

If a dog ingests rat poisoning he/she will develop a Vitamin K deficiency. Foods high i vitamin k can along with proper medical treatment help dogs in the activation of clotting mechanism.

You can not use food as the only rat poisoning treatment. It needs more treatment than "food" and you should contact your veterinarian as soon as possible you can.

While medical vitamin K treatment is mandatory, using rich vitamin k sources food can make you feel better as you support your dog through nutrition.

Dogs on antibiotics for a longer period can as well have less production of vitamin k. The bacterias producing the vitamin in the intestines of your dog can suffer from the antibiotics as well as other bacterias.

In several situations food containing lots of vitamin K can be needed.

Foods High in Vitamin K

Good food sources of vitamin k include broccoli, fish, brewer's yeast, soybeans and liver.

Resistance to diseases and a healthy immune system may be maintained with wholesome nutrition. Everybody can agree on this, but what is "wholesome nutrition"?

Lot of different opinions on this subject and some may say that some commercial foods for canines, not provide the balance they require of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. I can't sustain this opinion but, it might be more important that many commercial dog foods contains chemicals to extend the products shelf life.

One reason or the other, many dog owners advocate to make their own dog food.

Now, how do you make vitamin k rich dog food?

You can use it raw but I prefer to cook it slightly. Vegetables and the meat as well are more easily being digested if it is slightly cooked. That,s what i feel appropriate.

Boiling meat and vegetables just for a couple of minuets is perfect. This recipe is not done to feed for a longer period. But to use in a shorter time frame is OK.

You can also use it together with your normal dog food. It that case its more like a supplement to the normal diet.

Meat is the most and the remaining 20-40% should be vegetables such as broccoli - foods high in vitamin K also include squash, romaine lettuce, carrots, cabbage, celery and asparagus.

Supplements also are added to maintain a healthy ration of trace minerals, vitamins and fatty acids. You may wish to add, brewer's yeast, kelp, honey, vinegar, yogurt and eggs.

A good homemade raw or cook dog food recipe is:

  • 1 lb. raw ground meat
  • 2 cups ground vegetables
  • 2-4 oz. raw meat (organs such as gizzards, heart, liver, etc.)
  • Half cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 T ground kelp
  • Half-cup plain yogurt
  • 3 eggs with shells
  • Palmful of parsley
  • Combine all ingredients by pureeing, chopping or mixing in large chunks and store in the refrigerator or freezer.

Heat it a bit, just before served.

You can make this recipe one of the foods high in vitamin K of by using liver and broccoli as the organ meat and the vegetables.
