Ok,I have heard garlic is poisionous to dogs and I have read it is good for dogs. Some people give it to their dogs to help with fleas.I use frontline plus monthly but still find fleas on him,so I would like something else to help along with the frontline plus. Can I give him garlic pills and if so how many milligrams a day would be good?
My Comment:
Hi Danny
In Sweden Garlic is used for protection against ticks.
Most vet do not recommend the use of garlic anymore.
The reason is it content of thiosulphate.
All onions contain this molecule and is helps in the uptake of vitamin b in humans.
Dogs lack an enzyme and therefore in large doses thiosulphate can damage the red blood cells.
I have had patients in demand of several blood transfusions after eating onions.
It is a matter of dose and perhaps some Garlic is no danger but consumption of large doses of garlic is a problem.
But how much is too much?
So, based on my past experiences and my knowledgge, I no longer recommend garlic - mainly to be on the safe side really.
All the best
