Golden - Epilepsy and Best Dog Food

by Linda

I am looking to have my 8 year old golden retriever recently diagnosed with seizures on a gluten free diet that has the right percentage of protein since he is on phenobarbital and i have to worry about his liver. We will be doing the liver testing every few months to make sure his liver is ok. There are so many dog foods and I want to make the right choice with the hopes of getting his seizures under control. I was going to buy Taste of the Wild but then read that protein levels that are high are not good for the liver. Any suggestions?

My Comment:

Hi Linda

Sorry to hear about his epilepsy.

Goldens can have a tendency to develop epilepsy, but many of them manage quite fine on medication.

About his food - I would find it the best to give him some kind of a liver diet.

I would not find it wise to give anything else.

On top of this I would recommend some liver supplement, for example Denosyle - or something similar. At least in the beginning until you see how the medication affects his liver, which can vary a lot from dog to dog.

When it comes to liver food I use Royal Canin Hepatic and find this OK.

I admit its not grain free and it has some preservatives in it, but in my opinion the goal of give the most liver protective food as possible is the most important.

Therefore, I am willing to compromise on the food quality and make the liver protection as good as possible.

All the best
