Golden Puppy With GI issues

by Liesl

I have a 6 month old golden retriever with reoccurring loose stool or sometimes diarrhea. The result of which she has not been able to naturally express her anal glands. Not a pleasant procedure to perform manually. I am concerned that her glands will become infected if we dont' correct the problem. I have changed her food several times but she still is having the problem. Presently her food is Blue Buffalo puppy formula that I supplement with bran flakes to form up her stools. She has had another bout of diarrhea this week and was put on a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken. I would like to know if there are any diets or specific food brands you would recommend for my puppy. Perhaps I am doing something wrong. Any advice you could provide would be very much appreciated.

My Comment:

Hi Liesi

I am glad to give you my advice and I sincerely hope it helps.

Not that long time ago I had a similar Golden patient in my practice. Of course it is not possible to draw parallels between and say it is the same.

Have you been at the vets?

It might be a good idea to run the normal basics such as parasites and worms, tests for the pancreas and vit b's, liver kidney and so on.

But your mail got me thinking of my patient. I did everything I could and everything was OK and we ended up using a diet from Hills called Puppy Healthy Development Lamb and Rice

No diagnosis was possible and I even remitted them to a larger animal hospital – same result, they couldn't make any diagnosis either.

The Puppy Healthy Development food was probably the one doing the job and after some weeks and months the stomach was stable, so it was possible to stop the antibiotics tablets without the diarrhea coming back

So, I would recommend you to try this diet and see if that one could do some good for you.

All the best
