Grain Free with Higher Carbs

I have a senior doberman pinscher who has always had trouble keeping on weight. I switched him to a no-grain diet and he has lost a few pounds. He is otherwise more energetic, his coat richer and looks healthier on the no grain food. Are there any no grain foods that have a higher carbohydrate count? What else can I do to keep him at a slightly higher weight?

My Comment:

Hi Sandra

I suppose that his weight was normal and not overweight from the beginning.

You have a couple of choices. First I wonder how much you are feeding him. Could it be possible you are giving him too little food?

Be aware that the amount you read on the bag is by no means the only truth. Some dogs should have less while others should have more than stated on the bag.

This would be one option. The other is to try another food. To make a reply to your question if it is possible to get no grain food containing more carbohydrates...maybe, but I don't know for sure.

Most people buying this type of dog food are properly looking after low carb dog food. But, you may wish to look after grain dog food, but in a high quality.

High quality grain dog food is not a bad dog food. I am only against grains in the sense of them being a cheep filler or cheep ingredient of low quality.

Acana makes a grain food containing less protein compared to their other brand Orijen (their no grain do food brand), but still more than other grain based dog foods. The amount of carbs is higher than compared to Orijen but still the same quality of the fresh meat and the other ingredients. So, even if there is grain in Acana, it is high quality ingredients, thats important.

You might see other brands like Acana or Orijen, but I like them and use them as good examples.

All the best
