High Quality Dog Food

Dr. Schonbeck: Sure glad to find your website. Today my vet put my 10-11 (?) yr old Beagle/Terrier (rescue) on Hill's C/D. I do not like the ingredients in this. We feed our dogs only the very best foods, no by-products,artificial colors, preservatives, etc. only whole grains,i.e., barley, brown rice..no corn or wheat. In fact, nearly to the point of human ingredients. We supplement with fresh/frozen vegs & often buy chicken/turkey/beef to mix in. We have had lots of experience with dogs over time & find that our efforts pay off in healthy long lived companions. I have a book on homemade diets; Is there a manufactured diet that would meet our criteria ? Price is quite secondary.

THANKS !

My Comment:

Hi

I agree that Prescription Diet c/d might not contain the best ingredients.

I don't know if there is any special reason for your vet to advice this food. It is used in dogs if they have problems with struvite crystals in the urine.

My answer is therefore based on the assumption that no such reason is apparent.

The first one which came to my mind is Ziwi Peak from new Zealand. They produce very high quality dog food.

I don't think the ingredients can be much better.

Their homepage you can find Here

If you look at this page Top Ten Dog Foods you can fine more dog food made of very good ingredients.

But as I said the "down under dog food" was the one I first was thinking of.

Just remember that many of the premium dog foods contain substantial smaller amounts of grain, and therefore often less carbohydrates, than "normal" dog food.

It might not be a problem but a slow start on the new food is always a good advice to follow for your dog to get use to the new food.

All the best

Per Schonbeck
