Homemade dog treats

Hi,
I am looking for some advice regarding homemade doge treats. I would like to make some and have found lots of recipes on the net, but I would like to make sure that what I am feeding my dog is healthy. Can you offer me any advice regarding ingredients I should use, avoid or limit? Also, will my dog's size/weight affect the quantity of ingredients I use/ size of treat?
I think your website is great and very informative. I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards,
Ellie

My Comment:

Hi Ellie

I think one of the best homemade dog treats is “Dried Liver”. It's very tasty and easy to bring with you out for training purpose.

As for every treat, you should not give too much.

This might not be true if you use the daily food for a treat – many dogs might just like to get “something” and this could be the normal food.

(I admit, this opinion might just be too boring and not anything you find attractive at all.)

But, in sickness or in weight loss situations, it can be a solution.

I have made a page about making “Making Dog Food” - here I show you to make homemade dried dog food and could absolute be used as a treat as well.

Otherwise, as mentioned before, I like to use the dried liver. Here is how to do:

Get one liver of good quality.

You cut it into semi thin slices and a suitable length. (remember that they will shrink during the process).

Place these slices on a baking pan (with baking paper) and they should not touch each other.

Then you put it in a preheated owen 90 degrees Celsius (200 F) for around 2 hr. You should now and the rotate the pan 1 or 2 times during this period.

Cool and enjoy thereafter.

Regarding seize of the treats. I use to recommend either “far to large” (chewing purpose) or “too small”
as treats so in both situations they cant get stuck in the throat.

All the best
