How to treat heartworm??

by michele

Hello,

What is the best way to treat heartworm in dogs? Is the treatment safe? I have heard the IV treatment can be dangerous.

Any advice would be appreciated. Currently our dog is on oral heartworm preventive medicine to treat young worms (lavare??) I think they are called.

Thanks.

Answer:

Dear Michele

Monthly treatment containing the special medication will "keep them away".
Often you use tablets or some "spot on" medication.
You kill the worms at such an early stage the are not at any danger at all.
As said before, heartworms is not any risk in Sweden so my in practice knowledge is very limited.
It's not needed having any monthly treatment for this parasite here.
