idiopathic head tremor - boxer

Hi,

Our dog has recently started head shaking/trembling (in last 5 weeks). We changed her diet 7-8 weeks ago. She has had blood and urine tests done at the vets and they have all come back clear and has developed small calcium cloudy deposits on her eyes since she has began the tremors. We have you tubed other videos of dogs with this disorder and it is exactly the same as Beau, happening only in the head, when they are relaxing and show no signs of discomfort or disorientation.

Our vet is being very dismissive of the possibility that this is idiopathic head tremors as it is so unknown and is advising us to take her to uni of bristol for intensive tests for causes. This is obviously a pricey affair even with insurance!

The reseach we have done on this online has pulled up a lot of information on other sufferers and how changing the diet can help. She is currently on Eukanuba puppy large breed 0-24mnths, prior to this she was on royal canin adult boxer food but we felt she lost condition as was still growing. Before this she was on royal canin boxer puppy (0-15mnths).

Any advice would be really appreciated as the only info we can find are peoples own findings with their dogs. Not sure what "better" food we can use as we have always tried to maintain her on reputative high end feeding solutions. Especially during her important growth years!!

Many thanks

My Comment:

Hi Amy

I been doing some research and asked on of my client boxer breeders for any advice. She have tried to get help from all her contacts.

This problem is not known in Sweden. Maybe because most vets would treat it as epilepsy, and therefore not recognize it as being idiopathic head tremor.

I am sorry not being able to give you any help.

You have probably read most about the food recommendations on the net. They vary a lot and some having good results trying a "allergy diet".

I think it is basically a "try and see" if the result is positive.

Personally I am doubt full, if diet can do any good, but as I said try and see....

You newer know.

All the best

Boxer has head bopping
by: Anonymous

Oh my goodness ! My vet also dismissed me when I mentioned this as a probable cause. Last night I was in tears b/c my Navy ( my boxer )her head was bopping up and down and I could not control it. I went on youtube the very next morning and found A LOT of similar stories. Once I calmed down, I printed out this info and drove her to the vet. Well...... the vet took the papers that I printed, folded it up and handed it back to me. What the hell ?!!!!! Is this "taboo"( spell ) or something ? I am so confused ?

dog food
by: danny jo seymore

I have studied dog nutrition for two years and my opinion is that eukanuba and royal canin are not good dog foods.Don't know anything about the seizures but I do know about dog kibble. I personally like grain free, high protein for my jack russell. Maybe orijen or acana. Dr. Per can help you with your dogs diet. thank you and I hope your dog improves.

Head Tremors
by: Sheila, Canada

Sorry to hear about your Boxer. Can you check with your breeder about any past history in the breeding stock. I only know of a couple of Boxers here where I live that have had a predisposition to seizures in general. I only know of one case where a Holistic Veterinarian here suggested a raw food diet that helped the dog not have as many. Some information that has been noted is that it may be a reaction to some foods that still use chemical preservatives. Not many do anymore. Perhaps the only way to find out is with neurological screening and tests.Being such a young dog, seems unlikely it's a tumor. I had a dog (not a Boxer) that developed seizures from Cushings disease, she would fall over and become ridgid, but this does not sound like a seizure that you dog is having.Good luck!
