what do you think about this food? It's seems high in calcium, phosphorus etc... http://www.naturesvariety.com/Instinct
My Comment:
Hi Chris
I don't know if you have any particular formula om your mind among the different kibbles, but, in general they are high in calcium and phosphor.
My first impression from looking on the dog food is positive. I find it very honest to actually name the food Chicken Meal Formula, Beef Meal & Lamb Meal Formula and so on when they are based on meat meals.
Many other companies try to make the impression of "fresh meat" when in fact the food are based on grains or meat meals.
They all contain probiotics and that's also a sign of quality.
Some of the ingredients I can't understand why they are in the food. In the Chicken Meal Formula there is listed honey, not as a major ingredient but it don't need to be in the food at all.
The food are only grain free and not to be seen as low-carb foods as the contain carbs mainly as tabiocia. The total carbohydrates are not listed but you have to calculate it your self. That I find a bit negative as this nothing to hide I think.
And the the calcium levels. Yes the are high. I have found the Rabbit Meal Formula only have 1,12% calcium which is a lot better compared to 2,24% in the Chicken Meal Formula.
Most authorities can accept calcium levels up to 1,50% In studies done with Great Danes and an calcium level on 3.3% you could see growth disturbances.
Looking at the F&Q section they don't claim it can be used in puppies. The recommend that veterinarians are asked for advice. Further they recommend rotation feeding.
This can also bring the actual calcium intake down if you rotate it properly.
But, I would not be happy using this in puppies of the fast growing breeds at all.
To sum it up - I think the quality is OK, but the calcium levels and (phosfor levels in certain diseases) should be taken into account and the food should be used accordingly.
That's very important
All the best
