Large Breed Dog Food
Whats the point?

Dog Food For Puppies - Best dog food for puppies

Owner with large breed rottweiler

Large breed dog food - Well,You could do without. But not without feeding your large breed dog in a special way!

Here you will learn whats the best dog food for puppies in the BIG dogs

The growth pattern in large breeds is very special and needs attention right from the beginning. Imagine if you should grow mature in just 18 month and not 18 years! I will explain what nature has to deal with when large breeds is going from baby to adult and why using large breed dog food can be a good investment.

  • Too much food
  • Insufficient diet calcium
  • Excess diet calcium
  • Role of vitamin D

Too much food

In adults this will increase fat deposits. In growing dogs this will not happen. Instead, the growth will be too fast and the period of growth will be reduced. The juvenile skeleton is overloaded.

Too much load on the ”soft bones” leads to developmental problems and to mechanical damage. Several studies indicates increase risks such as osteochondrosis, hip dysplasia, increased joint laxity and so on.

This is the reason the amount of large breed dog food is according to the age and the percentage of the pubs adult weight

Insufficient diet calcium

The amount of calcium needed in the diet is determined by the age and the dogs adult seize and weight. Small dogs grow less fast than large dogs. Large dogs has a bigger need of calcium to build its fast developing bones compared to a smaller breeds.

To less calcium makes the boned weak and less dense. You will see different types of fractures and osteoporisis in dogs not getting enough diet calcium

Excess diet calcium

Nothing to recommend! The absorption of calcium in small pups is mostly passive process in the intestinal wall. The result - puppies cannot regulate the calcium level in the blood depending the food intake. Giving too much calcium in puppies less than 6 months of age can therefore easy result in excess calcium.

Growing older the absorption is getting more and more controlled. But still feeding too much calcium in growing dogs will cause problems. This will prevent calcium from the bone to be released. Growth and remodeling of the bones will not be normal. This will increase the risk of osteochondrosis.

If the diet calcium balance is not optimal in the period of weaning (3-6 weeks of age) this will result in problems later in life! Giving the right amount of calcium is important and this is the main reason why using large breed dog food can be a good choice.

Role of vitamin D

Vitamin D and calcium is connected with each other. In young dogs feeding too less vitamin D will result in rickets and growth plate disturbances. Too much on the other hand can lead to osteochondrosis.

In older dogs, release of calcium from bones will increase if you feed too much vitamin D. Risk of calcification in the tissue can be seen.

My point.

Rottweiler is a large breed dog food user
The growth of large dogs can be a problem. You have to remember what's natural! It's natural for a dog to get adult in 12-18 months. On the other hand, it's only one gene deciding the seize of the dog.

Think about it!

Basically it is the same genome used in the smallest dog and the biggest dog. Same genome - totally different outcomes! No wonder that nature can have some problems now and then.

I think using large breed dog food can make sense as this will help nature and make growth and development of large dogs more healthy. This is when modified dogs can need some “modified” dog food
