Milk Thistle Side Effects
Milk Thistle For Dogs and Milk Thistle Extract
Milk thistle side effects is few, but there is some important facts for you, about this herbal supplement. Just be aware that while milk thistle is quite safe in general, there is always a risk that some individual will react negative.
Registered medicines is very controlled. If your Veterinarian suspect some kind of negative reaction towards one registered medicine. He or she is obligated to report it to a proper authority. This is to make sure that as much information as possible is obtained. To make it a safe as possible.
Reporting of side effects in nutritional supplements is not a "must do" in many countries. Therefore, some side of milk thistle side effects could be "hide". Not intentional of course. It's just the way it works.
In humans, these milk thistle side effects is seen:
- Nausea
- anorexia
- Diarrhea
- Sleeping difficulties
- Tiredness
- Pain in joints
And some more severe
- Itching
- Stuffed nose
- Rashes
- Difficult breathing
- Larynx swelling
None of these symptoms not been seen in dogs. But, I decided have this list here, as you can be aware of symptoms like this.
Milk thistle for dogs has been evaluated and tested in some experiments without any serious side effects has been seen. So, milk thistle is probably very safe to use in dogs.
If used to high doses some diarrhea is seen. This is probably because the heps is bitter in nature.
Bitter heps in Chinese Medicine is often used as laxatives. This is why Milk Thistle in high doses causes diarrhea. If your dog develop diarrhea, better to ask your Veterinarian about advice. But, often it can help just to give less supplement. This should improve diarrhea.
I am a big fan of client contact. What do I mean? I like when my clients contact me and ask me, well what they might consider being stupid questions. One "side effect" not directly caused by Milk Thistle, could be trying to "fix it" by your own. Use of the milk thistle extract should only be done if your dog has a liver disease. An Liver disease where the use of supplement is appropriate.
This is important. Don't make your Veterinarian an enemy. Make him/her your "friend". If you don't feel able to do this - try another! Change vet!
Drug Interactions
Possible interactions with other medicines is poorly known in dogs. Be aware of this if your dog receives other medication. The liver is important in detoxification of several medicines. The enzyme system Cytochrome P-450 often involved. Milk Thistle in theory could both have an increasing effect or decreasing effect on medicines by influencing how the medicine is metabolized. But, again - no known interactions are known at present. Just have it on the back of your mind. This is true both for milk thistle extract and other thistle products
Is milk thistle safe in Pregnancy?
Be careful not to give milk thistle to a pregnant dog. This is not recommended in humans and same apply to dogs. At least before we get more information and more knowledge regarding safety and possible milk thistle side effects in pregnat dogs.
Long-Term use of Milk Thistle
I would not recommend long-term use of milk thistle. Again, a possible milk thistle side effets could be a liver problem. Not good! That is what you try to avoid. I feel this has to be further investigated before this can be recommended.
