My Puppy Has Hives!

by Shari

I have a 6 month old pit bull puppy who is in good health. He is breaking out with hives on his back, shoulders and rump after he eats. I have tried AVO, Kirkland, Blue Buffalo, and Authority puppy foods and he continues to display the same symptoms. I give him a tablespoon of yogurt with each meal and I have tried eliminating this as well. There must be an ingredient in the kibbles that is making him break out. Do you have any suggestions?

My Comment:

Hi

I have never heard about this before so thank you for your mail.

Hives is not that often seen in dogs. But, I too suspect some allergy reaction.

What about if you make your own dog food – does he still have this reaction?

I think the only way to find out what he is reacting towards is eliminate the possible causes one by one.

Preservatives...maybe. You could eliminate by making your own puppy food for some time and see if the reaction disappears on this diet.

If yes, you know that there is something in commercial dog food he is reacting towards.

I think this is the way to go. And yes it is a puzzle and I am also quite puzzled by this problem.

It could be very interesting to hear from others experience the same problem.

You can find a recipe on home made puppy food in my “puppy dog food” section.

All the best
