new rescue poodle mix puppy owner, small miniature (7 lbs at 6 mos)

Why does most puppy food have lamb vs chicken as the protein source.Which is better?

My puppy is a finicky eater, who tends to not want to eat -- so I want to get the best I can in the little she does eat. Is Natures Recipe (by Del Monte) a good brand, especially the Easy-to-Digest formulas for puppies & for small breeds.

Thnx.

My Comment:

Hi Ron

I think one important reason is it creates a sense of "soft and easy digestible food" when chicken and lamb is used. Often lamb is used and understood as being protective against allergy - which is not true.

Other important such as availability is also important as well.

I have had a look on the Natures Recipe.

It looks reasonable to me at a first glance. But read on.....

But, it is not grain free.

Many of the recipes contain rice, barley or oat meal as the main ingredients. So, if you would like a grain free dog food this is not for you.

The food contains no artificial flavors or preservatives - positive as well. On the other side they contain menadione, and this is by some seen as a possible dangerous ingredient. Personally I don't know how to see menadione. It doesn't need to be in dog food at all, so at the moment i tend to like dog food not containing this "vitamin".

The Omega 3 is from plants and not from fish, so a slightly negative finding as fish omega 3 is more efficient and also costs more. This can be a sign of "cheep thinking"

I don't know how it is priced but as being a grain dog food is should be priced thereafter (cheaper) compared to grain free dog food.

If I should decide to buy this food or not - I would not. I really would try to find another containing omega 3 from fish and no menadione. Grain or no grain, this is a personal decision but you can find better quality dog food than this one in both categories.

All the best
