Orijen and Soft Stool

Hi, thank you for your site. I just got a new boxer/sheppard mix puppy and based on what I read on your site I've been feeding her Orijen large breed puppy food. However, more often than not, she has very soft stool. I feed her about 1 1/2 cups twice a day. I'm sure if I gave her more, she'd eat more. (she's 8.4 kg and 5 months old). Should I change brands? If so, what are the other brands I could try?

Thank you!

My Comment:

Hi

Yes - diarrhea or soft stool can be seen when changing from another dog food. This is my experience as well but I cant explain it apart from it being different type of food compared to the more "normal" ones.

Most owners don't accept this and wish to either go back to the regular food or try another.

What I am going to recommend in the future is a very slow start. Perhaps going from the old food to Orijen during a 4 week period. Try this and see if this very slow change can make diarrhea or soft stools disappear.

The most common type of dog food is grain based. Orijen is of very high quality but that doesn't help if you dog (even after a very slow transformation) get soft stools from it.

Acana is same quality ingredients and the production quality as Otrijen. But Acana contain high quality grain and are probably more like traditional dog food.

I would therefore see this a good option.

All the best
