7 yr old yorkie with chronic pancretitis..doing well with Science diet GD wet and dry. Wt is good. Looking for something not as costly to feed with low protein/low fat..My other dogs: another yorkie, cocker spaniel, and a mixed jack russel and chichauwah are geting so fat on same diet. I actually spoon feed them to measure out how much they get. Is Gd making the others fat Thanks..Have researched so much on web it gets confusing. Do over weight dogs need high protein?
Hi Gail
It is very easy to get total lost on the net.
About dog food and protein. Well - I would not claim to have the truth. But I have thought a lot about protein, carbohydrates and weight problems.
I think some individuals can be more sensible to sugar than others. If a dog has a strong tendency to get fat and being hungry all the time (and no other medical problem has been diagnosed!!) it would in my opinion be worth to try a high protein dog food.
Many dog food has grains in them and this disqualifies them of being high protein dog foods. Look after grain free dog foods with a protein content around 40 percent.
You can find much more about this in my "no grain dog food section"
The disadvantage is these type of food might be more expensive than "grain" ones.
All the Best
