No, not all the time. But, Pain is often seen as the nature of the disease is inflammation in the pancreas.
Enzymes from the gland, which should take care of digestion in the intestines, leaks out and starts to "digest the body". Inflamed pancreas and peritonitis is the result.
No wonder pain and stress symptoms is often seen in these patients.
Pancreatitis symptoms can vary a lot. Now, many vets realise that the disease probably are missed in many cases. If we look, many of the symptoms are very diffuse.
The most common symptoms of pancreatitis is (in descending order):
- No appetite (anorexia)
- Vomiting
- Weakness and depression

Therefore, if your dog is one of the breeds having more problems of this kind; Labradors, Schnauzers Dash dogs and Cocker Spaniels. Perhaps is overweight as well and having one or more of the just mentioned symptoms...

Abnormal Pancreatitis Symptoms
Also if your dog has periods of being more listless, or perhaps show sign of slight pain from the abdomen. It surely doesn't need to be serious symptoms at all. Even if they only come form time to time. Well, it could still be small attacks of pancreatitis pain. Some dogs are having serious symptoms. Sudden and shock like symptoms, getting very very ill as in necrotizing or acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. Others having only minor problems. But it still is extremely important to find those in order to prevent further damage to the pancreas.
Your dog being depresses and abdominal pain from time to time This could perhaps be symptoms of pancreatitis
How to diagnose pancreatitis dogs
More and more attention is paid to this disease. That's important. If I don't have it on my mind, I am less likely to find it. So, more awareness is important. Some data indicate that ninety percent of pancreatitis dogs are undiagnosed. I find that quite scary. Having good diagnostic tools is crucial. Two blood samples used in decades is Lipase and Amylase. Enzymes from the gland. Amylase and Lipase increased as one of the pancreatitis symptoms. The big disadvantage is they are both non sensitive. The only finds 50% of the dogs actually having the disease. Now, we have a more specific blood test called cPL or canine pancreas-lipase specific assay. This one is a bit more sensitive and fins around 80%. So a lot better. It is very fast and can be done within ten minutes and during the clinical examination. This is a very powerful tool, perfect. Often I do use this test almost as a screening test. This to minimize risks of not finding inflammations in pancreas. .
