Please help with puppy food advice

by Candace Squries
(london ontario Canada)

My puppy, who is 6 months of age had acute pancreatitis at 8 weeks old. Recovered since then. She is a small Schnoodle. Adorable of course I have trouble with her eating her dry medical food. IS there another brand good for her. I see you have written the Royal Canine Digestive low fat food, but is that good for a puppy. Usually the puppy foods are higher in fat? Also she tends to eat her poop at times. could this be something lacking in her diet? Please help I want Roxy to live a long happy life.
Thank you Candace Squires

My Comment:

Hi Candace

What kind of dog food are you using now?

Pancreatitis in the age of 8 weeks, that's a tough start for a little dog.

No, its true that food for young dogs contains lot of fat. This is not good for the pancreas.

I have been looking on different foods, and all the recommended foods for pancreas diseases is only for dogs more than 1 year.

But - there is no food which has the indications you would need.

Until now you have been using a food apparently without any more pancreas problems. It would be really interesting for me to know what you have used.

If it is some kind of dog food for puppies i would continue using this. When she is one year old you can switch to dog food with less fat.

If you have made your own dog food and are concerned about her growth you might be better of using Intestinal low fat - even if no indication exists.

So, it all depends. After all she is not becoming a big giant seize dog. This has the major advantage of a more slow growth. This, puts less "strain" on the nutrition needed for optimal growth and gives you more choice.

This is important in small dogs bur far more important in the bigger ones.

Please let me know what kind of food you are using now.

I am very curious about this.

All the best
