Puppy diarrhea

Hi. I have a 5mth old boxer puppy. He is on eukanuba puppy growth mixed in with lean cuts canned dog food. He had terrible gas and constantly chewed on his paws, tail and leg. So, i figured I switch his food.

I decided on kirkland Super premium puppy food. I started mixing in 1 hand full with his old food. Did that for 1 week. Everything was good. Increased it to 50/50 and after thr 3rd day he started developing diarrhea. When the diarrhea wasn't better the 2nd day, i put him on a bland diet. Everything was good 2 days after. Slowly increased the regular dog food to his diet. Did mix it 50/50 but started with a hand full added to the rice and chicken.

Everything was good until i was almost up to the regular amount he should get. About 1 week geadual increase of the dog food. Still 50/50 and up to 1 1/2 cup per feeding.now he is back to diarrhea.

Can it be the kirkland dog food or what would cause this reation? He is otherwise fine. Active, playful, shiny coat, alert eyes. Has abit of discharge but always did. Even as a pup.

Thanks for uour help.

My Comment:

Hi Carmen

It has to be Kirkland dog food which makes him having diarrhea. From what you are telling me, I would think so. But why?

Have looked on Kirkland dog food. It looks fine to me. Its not grain free, but otherwise the ingrediense look reasonale.

So, the questions is why?

Of cause some intestinal parasites can be a cause, maybe take a stool sample and submit to your vet and get it looked upon.

Some boxers do have a stomach which is very sensitive.

The only way to find out is to continue try out different dog food brands.

What about his itching - did it change? Just remember if you suspects food allergy you might see itching up to 8-12weeks on the new food before you can judge the result.

I think you could try out some allergy diet or perhaps Royal Canin Sensitive for a trial and see how the stomach react on those.

Just monitor his weight very carefully. He should not grow too fast - about 1 kg ( 2 Lbs) pr week on average.

These are the allergy foods ones I know well, but you can try others as well. Just to see if it could be some intolerance or allergy. You can buy them at your vet.

I hope this can be some help at least.

All the best
