Puppy Skin Sores

Dear Per Schonbeck DVM,

I have an 6 month old (long haired) Labradoodle named Mason. He recently developed skin sores on his lower belly. Some of the sores look like baby acne others are larger and filled with light green liquid puss.

We recently changed his food to Purina One large breed puppy from Purina One puppy formula. He also eats Chicken Soup large breed puppy mixed with the Purina.

Do you think he has food allergy or is allegic to something in the yard? He has had the sores for a few weeks now and they arent going away. He is not in pain though he does bite at them some.

Mason is also on Frontine and Heartguard. He is up to date on his vaccines. We use Johnson&Johnson baby shampoo and he is regularly groomed.

Please let me know your thoughts and thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Laura S. and Mason

My Commentg:

Hi Laura

No I don't think this has anything to do with allergy.
As you explained they are on the belly and from your description it sounds like "impetigo".
In general, impetigo is seen in young dogs. As long it doesn't become any worse and spreads, it is normal just to monitor it.
Sometimes antibiotics are used, so please keep in contact with your regular vet as he should decide when this may be needed.
Impetigo is a infection in the skin but very superficial.
Often impetigo has a good chance of heal by it self, but not always.
It doesn't affect the hair follicles and therefore not the deeper structures in the skin.
But monitor it closely and let you regular veterinarian have a look at it if any worse.

All the best
Per Schonbeck
