Raw Food Diet for Dogs

Dog Raw Food Diet and BARF Diet For Dogs

Raw food diet for dogs are more and more popular. In a time where everyone wants to eat right, raw food eating has become extremely popular.

Men, women, children are all partaking in "going raw" for better health.

Something else that is catching on is a raw food diet for man's best friend as well.

But, not only one kind of raw food diet for dogs is to choose between. There are several raw dog food diets.

BARF Diet For Dogs

BARF stands for bones and raw food (or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food).

The concept of the diet is extremely simple. The dog gets fed only raw, fresh foods consisting of about 70% meaty bones that are raw, containing at least 50% meat. The rest included are fruits, vegetables and foods that are rich in protein, eggs, dairy foods and offal.

Barf contains no grain and no additives in any way. Green leafy vegetables is important as the sources of vitamins and micro nutrients.

Often the BARF diet is ground (apart from the bones) and supplements can be given as well.

Prey Model

Then there is the "Prey Model" raw dog food diet, which tries to simulate what the dog would actually receive if it attacked and ate a prey animal.

This means the muscle, blood, head, organs, skin and bone is used within this diet. The dog is usually given a small portion of feathers, scales, or fur that would naturally be ingested when eating a prey animal caught in the wild.

It is important to use whole foods in this model. Supplementation is not necessary as "whole food contains all nutrients". Only Omega 3 is sometimes needed and recomended because of a lower level in the meat today compared to wild animals.

Vegetables is not regarded as needed. This is not any natural food for dogs.

Ultimate Diet

Wondering how to start your dog on a raw food diet to better health and vitality? One of the manufacturers of raw food for dogs is ultimate diet.

Ultimate diet was initiated by Kymythy Schultze 1998.

This is kind a mix of BARF and Prey model.

Most of the food should consist of raw meat, tissue and organs. Raw bones comes as the second largest group and rest is supplements of fatty acids, alfalfa and vitamin c.

They use only meats fit for human consumption. No fillers, additives, chemicals, preservatives, nothing artificial. So, meats are of really good quality.

Volhard Model

Is made by Wendy Volhard and this diet contains cereal opposed to the other raw food diet for dogs.

Molasses, eggs, oil, yogurt, grain often given in the morning. In the evening you can give meets, herbs, wheat bran, wheat germ, garlic, brewers yeast, kelp and apple cider.

Some supplementation such as vitamin c and omega 3 is recommended.

Fresh fruit is given up to 3 times a week.

So, this diet is a lot different dog raw food diet than the others.
