I currently feed my 14 pound Lhasapoo Orijen dog food. More often than not his stool is runny. Runny enough where I have to continually clean him up afterwords. And I often see what looks like globs of bloody plasma. When I bring him to the vet, he puts him on an antibiotic and it goes a way, but always returns. Vet says its diverticulitis... But then advises me not to feed him vegetables which are full of fiber. Everything I have read said states to increase fiber in the dogs diet, but my vet is telling me the opposite.

I have thought about changing him to Acana but I worry since the protein content is lower.

Do you think a lower protein diet such as Acanacould help with his stool problem?

Or do you have any other suggestions I could try... perhaps you have had a similar case.

My Comment:

Hi

Yes it might be better....or not. Let me explain.

It really depends what the problem is. It could be the food he is kind of intolerant too. It could also be some kind or IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) which are becoming more and more frequent.

I have made a whole section about IBD - about the symptoms, how to make the diagnosis and how to feed IBD patients.

What do you do? I think you could try to switch to Acana. Try to see if this improves his stomach. Make a slow changes and give it a month before you judge the result.

If no better I should bring him to the vet and have some test (parasites at first) done. Your vet ca also take some vitamin b blood samples which might tell you something about the status of the intestinal wall (its not that "black and white" but the info is important).

But at first try Acana as you do not need to worry about the protein content.

If Acana is the best food for his stomach it is OK and Acana is still very good quality dog food.

All the best
