Skin irritation caused by the collar

by Ian Abbott
(LE13 1TZ)

We adopted a small 2 year old terrier/whippet cross dog 8 weeks ago. His collar had been too tight in the home and had rubbed a stip of his fur away. This has got larger and larger. Our vet gave him a steroid injection and a course or antibiotics. The bare patch is getting larger. We thought it was through scratching but this is not happening. The patch gets bright red sometmes and other times back to white. He has not got a collar on or anything else as this may rub.

Could this be due to diet?

Answer

Hi Ian

Well, it would surprise me if this has any relation to his food.

If a collar has been to tight it can take a long time before the skin is normal again. The irritation can cause the dog itching the "wound" and make it worse.

I would try to give omega 3 and a longer cause of antibiotics if needed.

Also try to find some kind of spot on remedy containing phytosphingosine. This molecule has the ability to glue the skin cells together and normalise the skin barrier.

In some of my patients having chronic wounds it has been fantastic.

In Sweden this is sold as "Douxo" spray or in small spot on bottles.

I use this a lot and have seen great results on all kind of skin irritations.

I would try this as no side effects is seen.

Try to ask your vet if he can help you buying Douxo from the company Ceva.

If not - I'll be glad if you contact me again and I will do my very best to help you.

All the best
