Switched to orijen
hi there,
My boston terrier puppy was on iams puppy food, she is 4 months old and I switched her to Orijen a week ago. Since the switch she has been much more gassy and has had diaharrea. Is this something that will pass or is this not the right dog food for her? My Comment:
Hi
I have seen the same in some of my patients as well. I guess it has something to do with the increased amount og protein.
At least one dog I know for sure it went away after some time. This dog was an adult.
I remember another dog (puppy) having the same problem, but I guess the owners bought another food (grain based) instead. So, I can't say for sure if it will pass on just being patient.
Puppy's in general is more phone to problems during food changes.
And if too much protein pass to the colon, you see increased activity and development of gases. The diarrhea's develops probably because of extra water being drawn into the gut lumen caused by osmotic forces.
Therefore, some other Orijen owners have given the advice to feed less amounts - at least in the beginning. Because it is richer than most grain based foods.
Weather it is the right food for her or not is difficult to say. At least you can try to buy Acana and try this one.
Acana is the "grain food" from the same company making Orijen, so the quality is very high.
You can also choose to go back to Iams - get the stomach back to normal and then very slowly go back to Orijen.
I admit to be a big fan of Orijen, so I think it can be worth it to try to see if the stomach problems can be solved.
But, some dogs probably need another food. I would give it another chance before giving up on it.
All the best
