Symptoms of Liver Disease

Canine Liver Disease Symptoms and Chronic Liver Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of liver disease in our dog friends can vary a lot. Based on my clinical experience I will guide you thorough the most common canine liver disease symptoms seen i clinical practice. In general canine liver disease symptoms could be something like this:

  • Increased water intake
  • Yellow colour on body membranes(Ikterus)
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Ascites (or abdominal enlargement )
  • Tiredness
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea

......and then when it doesn't show up in this way as well. Sometimes the symptoms of canine liver diseases can vary a lot. That's the excitement of being a vet. When the clinical judgement becomes a feeling in the stomach - an art.

Diseases in the liver can be acute or more chronic. Acute ones are more sudden onset, often with fever, perhaps vomiting, tiredness and perhaps a history of eaten something toxic. Chronic liver disease symptoms are often more gradual. Often weight loss, chronic diarrhea, lack of luster in the skin and fur. But much more slowly in progress.

From My Practice

vet per schonbeck about symptoms of liver diseases from his practice

Symptoms of liver disease from my practice. Here is an example when symptoms not are obvious on clinical examination, until......

This is an old lady from 1997. A small terrier dog that had some problem with mammary tumors. They suddenly appeared and began hurt a little. They where quite large. So I did an x-ray of the lungs and we decided to operate some days later.

Well, just a little comment. The situation of this owner is very special. Lot of serious health problems in the family. They where potentially life threatening. Therefore I decided to operate on their little dog. She was old but otherwise reasonable healthy. The whole family needed her to get happy again.

That's not always easy to make such decisions.

well, we decided to move on and scheduled operation some two weeks later (owner did have some hospital visits to do as well). But then...... something happened. This little sweet dog got so tired

The owner came to me. She had been tired for two days. The temperature was 40,5 C ( 105 F! ). She was warm on the tumors but not that painful. Her appetite was not good, but she drank water (not that much). The hart and lungs on auscultation was fine. She was slightly blue on her mucosa membranes but only very little. I decided to take some blood samples for the kidneys and the liver enzymes. But she had not obvious symptoms of liver disease

The dog did get some tablets intended for humans! Painkillers. Some of them is OK to use. But some aren't, or at least in a small dose. This little fellow did get a dose that where - well, a little to big. That did showed on the liver values. Both Alt and Alkp was raised - Alkp raised very much indeed

The dose was not lethal. With antibiotics and some supporting liver treatment she got fine and happy again. Ready for the next step, operation
