Too much proteins?

by Raphaël Pépin
(Quebec, canada)

Hi, I give my Klee Kai Puppy Orijen because I do believe in this product. Recently, a vet told me that too much protein in dog Food can cause kidney problems. What is your opinion on the subject?

Secondly, I am considering giving raw meat to my dog from a company in quebec that sells frozen raw food. If you have time, could you take a look at the ingredients on their website (www.karnivor.ca) and tell me what you think of it. Thank you so much!

My Comment:

Hi Raphaël

No.

I have heard this statement for a long time as well.
But, I have reconsidered this opinion a lot since it can't get confirmed in clinical trials.
High protein food trial test haven't been able to show any significant kidney damages in healthy dogs.

But, if I no longer are afraid of high protein content in healthy dogs, it might be different in dogs having tx kidney diseases (kidney failure)

High protein content might not be dangerous directly to the healthy kidneys. But, the increased amount of protein can lead to higher “azotemia” in dogs suffering kidney failure might cause nausea.

Azotemia can be said to be the waste products from the protein breakdown.

Nausea will lower the appetite. Therefore, by reducing the protein content (and the azotemia) - you might see dogs develop less nausea. They will therefore keep eating better despite their kidney problem.

In healthy dogs I don't see any problems.

In dogs suffering from kidney failure their could be some advantage in lowering the protein content.

I have had a look on the Webb site from “Karnivor”

Maybe its me, but I can find the ingredient list, not any information about the nutritional content – you know how much protein, carbohydrates and so on...

This have to be stated on the consumer packages at least, but I can't find it on the homepage - Why?

Might be a good reason. On the other hand I can't understand it why its not there

If you can find more detailed “Nutritional Value” or more detailed “Ingredients List” please let me know.

Its important information and difficult to really have an opinion without this information.

All the best

How to get ingredients
by: Raphaël Pépin

Thank you so much for this information.

Conerning the ingredients of karvivor, here is how you can get to it. (first click on the UK flag for the english version) then Products, Food for dog, Horse Meat (it's the one I'm giving... I am considering Chicken meat without cereals too...) Then, there's no translation yet, but you can roll your mouse over "cliquez ici pour la liste des ingrédients" and the indredients will appear.. in French though.

Thanks again!
