Tried Orijen 80/20

Hello Dr. Schonbeck,

I tried Orijen 80/20 for my puppy and he experienced soft stools. I went to Acana 60/40 Wild Prarie and now his stools are firm. Could it be the Orijen was too meat rich vs the Acana. Also, I heard Orijen is now changeing most formulas to include puppy blends to be 80/20. Thanks and you are always helpful. Chris

My Comment:

Hi Chris

From time to time, I experience some dogs getting soft stool going from normal grain rich dog food to try Orijen.

But, why the same should happen going from the Orijen ”original” to the new 80/20 I can't explain.

Not now at least.

True, there is more meat, but also slightly more carbs in the new compared to old Orijen. Why, this could be a reason the soft stool I can't explain.

In Sweden the 80/20 hasn't arrived so I am looking forward to see I any of my patients experiences some problems going from the old to the new.

What you have seen, is probably caused by the 80/20, but why.......that’s a very good question.

I will in the near future look closer into the new Orijen 80/20, so I might discover something and be able to give a explanation in a near future.

All the best

Per Schonbeck

Orijen new 80/20
by: Sheila

Hi, With reference to the soft stool issue with using the new formulation of Orijen, there have been A LOT of complaints on various website, one in particular called "Dog Food Advisor", I think it's become too rich of high protein for a lot of dogs to handle, even with slow change over. I have found even withg using the Acana Light & Fit for my overweight Norwich, it's been about one month for her stools to really firm up and I added a tablspoon of steamed veggies to one of her meals (she eats 2x day). also some days she "poops" more than twice. If this continues to crop up more often now, I think they should revise their formula. Some other brands like Legacy and Now have lowered the protein levels because of customer input. I would like to stay in the Acana line as time goes on or as previously emails I have sent, look into homecooked.
