Vitamin B is not only one vitamin.

The complex of different vitamin B can be difficult to understand as not all of them is important in veterinary medicine.

The main ones are:

  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
  • Niacin
  • Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
  • Biotin
  • Folic Acid
  • Vitamin B 12 (Cyanocobolamin or Cobalamine)

The two most important in veterinary medicine is undoubtedly Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 (also called Cobalamine).

Most Common Signs of Vitamin B Deficiency:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Skin lesions
  • Dry skin
  • Eye abnormalities

In intestinal disease these two can change and most often vitamin b deficiency is the same as deficiency of Vitamin B12.

Folic acid can sometimes get too low as well or sometimes to high. The latter, because of bacterial over growth and the following bacterial overproduction of Folic Acid.

In this case the abnormal blood levels of Folic Acid would be a sign of abnormal gut bacterial flora and increased bacterial numbers. Not a primary sign of disease by its own.

Sometimes diarrhea is difficult, sometimes easy to resolve. Vitamin b can be and aid in the diagnosis.
