Vitamin C in dogs

by Constance Burke, RD

I have a Bernese Mountain dog whose urine is Alkaline (pH 8) and is prone to urinary tract infections. My vet suggested acidifying her urine by giving"cranberry jc pills." These are pretty expensive, and I happen to have a jar of an Uckele product: Vitamin C (97% pure.) Ingredients state simply "ascorbic acid 97%"
May I use this product to acidify her urine? She weighs 109 lb.

My Comment:

Yes and no.

Yes - because it is possible to use it but, No, as you can sometimes see dogs can't cope with the acidity in human vitamin c supplements.

Dogs might better use the vitamin c ester as this one often is better tolerated by the dogs stomach and intestines.

You can try the one you have and if no side effects is seen it should be OK to use.

The normal dose of vitamin c is around 10mg / kg bodyweight and day divided in 2-3 doses.

All the best
