We are adopting a rottweiler from the RSPCA. He was found by an inspector in a near death condition. He has lost half a kilo this week due to diarrohea. Could he have any long term health issues, whether to his organs, bones or both, due to starvation? We have also been told he will need a special diet until he is stronger - can you recommend anything?

Many thanks.

My Comment:

Hi Wayne

No I don't think that he has any health issues because of his starvation, that's not very likely.

Of cause he should have some tests done to be completely sure.

It might well be the diarrhea has begun because of the same reasons small puppies can develop the same problem.

New food, new environment and so on.

In this case I would recommend some kind of "Gastrointestinal Diet".

Some diet made for sensitive intestines or made for dogs having diarrhea.

Try this for a period, and slowly build him up. When the stomach is normalised again you can switch him to a normal dog food according to your wishes and beliefs.

You can use some kind of pro-biotic as well to help him getting balanced.

If this not improve within 1-2 weeks I would call a vet.

Kindly and all the best
